What should I do about severe tear stains on my Bichon Frise?

Heavy tear stains in Bichon Frises are usually caused by tear fluid that can’t drain away normally; the tears accumulate around the eyes and easily oxidize, forming black or brown stains. To improve the problem, clean your Bichon’s eyes promptly and use a dedicated eye-wash solution to help reduce discharge and bacterial growth. Keep your dog’s diet light, and trim the fur around the eyes regularly. If the staining is severe, surgery to remove or reposition the tear glands may be considered.
