Measures to treat dog ringworm

1) Isolate promptly

Cage the dog alone or give it a separate area; do not let it roam or meet other animals, to avoid cross-infection. Even its bowls, belongings, and toys must be kept separate — no sharing.

After isolating, deep-clean the whole home, since the dog may have already left fungus around. Wash and disinfect fabric items; mop floors with disinfectant, focusing on where the dog spends time. Also clean and disinfect its daily items, and sun them if possible. A dry, clean home helps dog and owner.

2) Treat the ringworm

With the dog isolated and the home disinfected, start treatment. Prepare an antifungal skin spray and an antifungal ointment, put on gloves, find every patch, shave the surrounding fur, clean the area with saline, then disinfect with hydrogen peroxide.

Once dry, spray the sore, and when nearly dry apply the ointment, rubbing to absorb. Finally, put on an Elizabethan collar so the dog cannot lick the medicine. Change the dressing daily; if the patch grows instead of improving, a medicated bath may be needed — but baths carry poisoning risks if done wrong, so have the vet do it.

3) Add nutrition

Besides a poor environment, ringworm links to poor nutrition and weak constitution. Keep the home clean and give proper nutrition — fresh high-protein supplements like cooked beef or chicken breast and fruit, or a multivitamin. Enough vitamins help skin health.
