What happens when an adult dog gets coccidia?

Adult dogs infected with coccidia usually show diarrhea, blood at the end of the stool, abundant jelly-like mucus on the feces, decreased appetite, and depression. In more severe infections the dog may develop anemia, pale mucous membranes, weight loss, and vomiting.

To avoid confusing these signs with gastroenteritis, owners who notice the above symptoms should take the dog to a veterinary hospital for a fecal examination. If coccidia are confirmed, sulfa drugs or medications containing amprolium can be used for treatment.
