Cutting the quick makes the nail bleed, and the dog may struggle, resist or even bite from pain. Owners should calm it, then press with styptic powder and a dry cotton ball to stop bleeding, and finally apply a little iodine to disinfect.

When trimming, note the quick location; usually only the white part is safe to cut, and leave about 2 mm to avoid cutting the quick.
