What happens if the litter box is too small?

A litter box that is too small can cause the following problems. First, a cat needs enough space in the litter box to turn around, squat, and bury its waste. If the box is too small, the cat may not be able to perform these natural actions comfortably, leading to blocked or difficult elimination.

Second, when burying waste the cat may kick some litter out of the box, polluting the environment and increasing cleaning difficulty.
