What happens if I give my cat too much hairball paste?

Eating too much hairball paste can cause soft stools and diarrhea, because the paste contains dietary fiber, vegetable oil, mineral oil, and fish oil to promote intestinal movement and help pass hairballs. Overfeeding over-stimulates the gut, causing abdominal pain, diarrhea, and vomiting.

Also, some hairball pastes contain palatants; frequent feeding can lead to picky eating, obesity, and nutritional imbalance.

So feed hairball paste in moderation. Generally, during shedding season a cat only needs it 2–3 times per week; outside shedding season, 2–3 times per month is enough.
