A native dog without vaccines can still catch distemper or parvovirus. Although hardier than purebreds, puppies are weak and can be infected by contact with sick dogs, vomit, feces or contaminated food.
But rural dogs that rarely go out may skip vaccines, or just get the rabies shot.
