If the mother dog delivers naturally and bites the cord, tying is usually unnecessary. But if the owner assists and cuts with scissors, tie it with thread, because newborns are fragile with low immunity and the cord wound can breed bacteria and inflame, even causing systemic sepsis and risking life.
Tying the cord speeds its absorption and avoids infection.
