Ear mites cause severe itch; the hamster may scratch its ears and shake its head. The ear holds much black or coffee-colored discharge with a clear smell; untreated, ear canal inflammation follows.

After confirming mites, clean and disinfect the cage, then wipe the ear with a warm-water cotton swab daily; if no improvement, use pet ear-mite medicine.
