If a Golden Retriever eats a small amount of dirt, it usually has little effect because the body can pass most foreign material through digestion and excretion.

But if it eats a lot of dirt or does so frequently, it may develop indigestion, diarrhea and vomiting.

Eating dirt can also lead to excessive intake of non-nutritive matter, reducing absorption of real nutrients and eventually causing malnutrition.

Finally, sand and soil may block the digestive tract, causing vomiting, abdominal pain and constipation.
