The anal glands are small glands located beside a dog’s rectum that secrete a strong-smelling fluid used to lubricate the intestines, assist with defecation, mark territory, and identify other dogs. After removal, a dog’s daily defecation and social life may be affected to some extent.

Therefore, unless necessary, removing a dog’s anal glands is generally not recommended. If the glands become repeatedly inflamed or develop an anal gland cyst, surgery may be required, but after the operation keep the area clean and use antibiotics as directed to prevent infection.
