What happens if a dog swallows a turtle?

A dog that swallows a turtle can develop serious gastrointestinal problems. The shell is very hard and the dog’s intestines cannot digest it, easily causing a blockage with vomiting, abdominal pain, and constipation. Also, as a cold-blooded animal, a turtle may carry many bacteria and parasites that affect the dog’s gut.

If your dog swallows a whole turtle, watch it closely. If the shell is not passed within 48 hours, or the dog becomes lethargic or vomits, take it to a veterinary clinic promptly.
