What happens if a dog eats xylitol?

Expert Answer

A little xylitol shows no clear symptoms, but dogs cannot metabolize it; excess stimulates the pancreas to release much insulin, causing low blood sugar and potassium with lethargy, vomiting, drowsiness, convulsions and coma.

Therefore, if a dog eats xylitol, induce vomiting with soapy water promptly; if over 2 hours have passed, take it to a vet.
