What happens if a dog eats persimmons?

Dogs should not eat persimmons, because raw persimmons contain much alkali and atropine, and large amounts can poison the dog, causing lethargy, drowsiness, heavy drooling, rapid breathing, constipation or diarrhea, abdominal pain, muscle weakness, convulsions, and vomiting. Ripe persimmons are relatively safe for dogs and can be fed in small amounts, but persimmons are high in sugar and easily add to the gut’s metabolic burden, so they should not be overfed or fed long term.
