Eating mothballs can cause poisoning. Common synthetic mothballs contain naphthalene or paradichlorobenzene – cheap, pungent, and highly toxic. A dog may show vomiting, poor appetite, confusion, drooling, seizures, epilepsy, and an unsteady gait.

The pungent fumes also irritate the eyes, nose, and lungs, causing red eyes, tearing, runny nose, sneezing, and coughing. If a dog eats one, take it to a vet immediately for induced vomiting.
