A dog bite can transmit rabies through saliva; rabies is nearly 100% fatal and most mammals can catch it. If bitten, squeeze out contaminated blood, wash alternately with soap and water, disinfect with iodine, then get the vaccine at a hospital or CDC promptly.

If it was only a light bite without broken skin or bleeding, generally no worry; just wash with soap and water.
