What Foods Calcium-Boost a Hamster?
π Summary
Hamsters usually get enough calcium from diet, but when bones need support, use dairy, egg white, dried mealworms, shrimp, or fortified mix, while avoiding lactose-heavy milk and overfeeding.
1 Dairy, Egg, and Insects
Many reach for milk, but weaned hamsters are lactose intolerant and milk causes diarrhea, so it does not deliver calcium well; offer dairy products instead, which are easier to digest.
For a fracture from fighting or a fall, feed boiled egg white (not yolk, which is high in cholesterol). Dried mealworms are rich in calcium and protein; small shrimp also supplement calcium but can cause ‘heat’ if overfed.
2 Mix and Animal-Source Foods
If the hamster eats grains, switch to a fortified mix for calcium and the added benefit of tooth wear; mix the powder into familiar food if it refuses the mix. Animal-source foods like cheese balls, barley worms, and dried fish supply calcium and vitamin D, but don’t overfeed or nutrition becomes unbalanced.
Some chew stones also contain calcium, so unless special needs arise, daily diet is enough. Consult a vet for more.
