What does a sneezing cat look like?

When a cat sneezes, it first opens its mouth wide, then shakes its head and makes a sound, and on close observation the owner may see a little nasal discharge. There are many causes. Irritating odors, hair, or dust in the environment can stimulate the nasal lining and cause a brief sneeze that is nothing to worry about.

If cold weather lets bacteria invade and irritate the nose, the cat will sneeze frequently as a cold symptom and needs cold medicine. Finally, infections such as feline rhinotracheitis, influenza, or calicivirus also cause frequent sneezing with lethargy, loss of appetite, fever, and discharge, requiring prompt veterinary care.
