Earthworms are omnivorous and generally prefer decaying plant matter, including leaves, roots, fruit peels and vegetable leaves from various plants. Because their mouths are so small, food must be fully decomposed and fermented before it is given to them.
Besides plant-based food, earthworms also eat animal manure such as cow, horse and chicken dung. They dislike light and prefer to live in moist, loose soil rich in organic matter. For indoor breeding, use flowerpots, plastic tubs or ceramic containers, placing 100-200 worms per container.
