What causes hemolysis in dogs?

There are many causes of hemolysis in dogs, including autoimmune hemolytic anemia, hereditary hemolytic anemia, bacterial infection, poisoning, and drug allergy. Some dogs’ immune systems mistakenly attack and destroy their own red blood cells, causing hemolysis. Some dogs are also born with genes for hemolytic anemia. Next, when a dog is infected by certain bacteria, viruses, or parasites, its red blood cells may be destroyed. Also, eating certain medicines or foods such as onions, phenol, or aniline can cause hemolysis.
