1 Causes of Hamster Hair Loss
1. Aging: an old hamster loses skin elasticity and its coat, with weaker health. From about 1.5 years, age-related shedding appears and worsens with age.
2. Low protein: diet matters; without enough protein the coat lacks what it needs to grow and falls out. Keep the diet balanced.
3. Friction: constant cage-chewing or wheel-running with rough materials wears the fur. Wide cage gaps let the legs rub and damage leg fur, so choose supplies with care.
4. Seasonal shedding: normal and brief at season changes; no worry.
5. Grooming: in heat a hamster licks its genitals and scent gland often, wearing the surrounding fur. Some pregnant does bite off belly and nipple fur to nurse — mainly those with strong maternal drive.
6. Skin disease: usually from a poor environment — damp, dirty cages breed bacteria and cause dermatitis, with shedding plus red skin and dandruff. It is contagious, so isolate and treat at once.
