China’s police force relies on several well-established working dog breeds, each chosen for specific traits and duties.

German Shepherd Dog

The German Shepherd is one of the most common police dog breeds. Agile and highly obedient, these dogs were reportedly recruited as military dogs as early as World War I. Decades of careful breeding have produced a settled type: large, imposing, and rugged-looking, with excellent working ability that lets them tackle demanding tasks and endure intense workloads. That is why they are chosen as police and military dogs worldwide. They also make up the largest share of China’s police dog population, mainly handling drug searches, fugitive apprehension, and border patrol.

Rottweiler

The Rottweiler has a formidable appearance and a strong, muscular build, giving it great physical power — well suited to police work and an imposing presence that can deter opponents in certain situations. Their capabilities are genuinely strong: they move nimbly, show great endurance, obey well, and have a measure of aggression. In police and military roles they are mainly used for riot control and counter-terrorism, patrol, and explosives detection. As the world’s top riot-control dog, their performance is widely acknowledged.

Langqing Dog (Wolfdog)

The Langqing Dog joined the ranks of military and police dogs relatively recently. Ambitious and highly capable of surviving in the wild, it is strongly aggressive. With a wolf-like appearance, it is fierce by temperament, a good runner, highly resistant to blows, and possesses a strong fighting drive — it will not easily back down even against a powerful enemy. Yet it is also easy to tame. In recent years, through dedicated breeding, a small number of Langqing Dogs have entered China’s military and police dog corps.

Belgian Malinois

The Belgian Malinois, also called the Malinois, is another fairly common police breed. Compared with the German Shepherd it is more agile, faster, and more explosive in power, and it has a jumping ability other dogs lack — easily clearing walls and climbing trees. Its main duties include scent identification, evidence search, man-tracking, pursuit, drug detection, and explosives detection.

Chinese Kunming Dog

The Chinese Kunming Dog is an excellent police breed developed independently in China, carefully bred at the Ministry of Public Security’s Kunming Police Dog Base. Highly intelligent, with good memory, fast reactions, and lasting endurance, it is mainly used for border patrol, drug and explosive detection, and earthquake rescue. Beyond China, the Kunming Dog can now also be found in countries such as Cuba, North Korea, and Pakistan.

The breeds above are among the most common police dogs in China, but all police dogs undergo specialized training and must pass many challenges and tests. Their husbandry is also more standardized: handlers determine feeding frequency and portion size based on the dog’s age, feed type, training and workload, and physiological condition, and must feed on a fixed schedule, in fixed amounts, and at fixed temperature. In general, police dog feeding differs somewhat from that of household pets. That said, some police breeds — such as the German Shepherd — also adapt well to family life; with good training from its owner, a German Shepherd can become a loyal and capable companion.
