1. What Is Pet Diabetes?

By cause, diabetes divides into primary and secondary types.

Autoimmune diabetes is primary; the immune system attacks insulin-making beta cells, causing insulin deficiency.

Secondary diabetes is non-insulin-dependent—insulin can’t work properly (resistance), causing a secretion defect.

Most pet diabetes is primary; secondary is rarer. Causes include genetics, pancreatitis, obesity, infection, drugs, and islet amyloidosis; beta-cell damage is most common, usually with infection and obesity. Genetic diabetes is rare—only German Shepherds, Pekingese, and Collies show familial forms.

2. Symptoms of Diabetes in Dogs and Cats

Onset is slow, more in older pets, and females more than males. Early signs are subtle—daytime frequent urination that continues at night, with heavy drinking.

As it progresses, weight drops with thinning, tiredness, less activity, but appetite rises; urine rises 3–5 times with a rotten-apple smell from urine and breath. The classic signs: more drinking, more frequent and more urine, more eating, and weight loss.

3. Late Complications of Diabetes

At a certain point, acidosis can cause vomiting blood, bloody stool, and dehydration, leading to collapse from weakness.

Most dogs show cataracts, corneal ulcers, and retinal detachment early, often blindness; frequent urination can cause urinary infection and, if severe, difficult urination.

Diabetes can also cause kidney disease—high blood sugar, pressure, and lipids impair kidney function, bringing proteinuria and edema, even fatal renal failure. Cardiovascular complications include arteriosclerosis and capillary thickening. Nerve involvement causes neurological disease. It also raises risk of respiratory, TB, urinary, and skin infections—great harm overall.

4. Medication for Pet Diabetes

1) Insulin

Diabetic pets need long-term insulin—e.g., neutral protamine Hagedorn (NPH, intermediate) or protamine zinc insulin (long-acting). During injections, test urine ketones and glucose each morning and dose by weight to keep efficacy and avoid acute hypoglycemia.

2) Hypoglycemic drugs

Also give glucose-lowering drugs like chlorpropamide, which stimulate beta cells to release insulin.

3) Other drugs

Increased urine loses fluid, so give IV saline, Ringer’s, or 5% glucose-saline to replace it, volume by urine output. For acidosis, drip 5% sodium bicarbonate at about 1.5 ml/kg.

4) Diet adjustment

Feed high-protein, low-fat food; avoid excess carbs, or use a prescription diabetic kibble rich in fiber to curb glucose buildup.

Also give a multivitamin (A and B). Vitamin A protects vision against diabetes-related decline; B boosts skin/mucosal immunity and eases infection-prone mucosal damage. Dose 1–2 tablets per 5 kg, direct or in food; duration by micronutrient level or vet advice.

5) Treat the primary disease

Address triggers—obesity, pancreatitis, infection; removing the trigger eases symptoms.

6) Treat secondary infection

Diabetic pets are prone to secondary infection, especially urinary and skin. Because pets rest prone, bacterial urinary infection is already common and rises with diabetes—keep cephalosporin (cefadroxil) tablets for E. coli and staph urinary infection.

Also, pets get bumps and scrapes—dogs especially, from roads or play. Diabetes weakens skin healing, so small wounds easily infect, inflame, ulcerate; keep wound spray (e.g., Chuanglide) for antibacterial, anti-infection, and healing.

5. How to Prevent Pet Diabetes

Insulin eases symptoms but long use can weaken its effect, so prevention matters.

1) Diet intervention is key—cut carbs and high-calorie food that stress organs and trigger pancreatitis; add fiber, which controls blood sugar and reduces hunger, thus controlling portions and obesity.

2) Add maltose components to the diet to release glucose fully and lower blood sugar, boosting metabolism and reducing obesity and diabetes.

3) Ensure plenty of water for metabolism and absorption; dry-food-only pets especially need more to aid degradation and reduce gut irritation.

4) Exercise prevents obesity and thus diabetes risk.
