The Curious Sleep Positions of Cats

Cat Sleep 📅 August 6, 2026 👁 8396

📝 Summary

Cats doze ~3/4 of their 16–20 daily hours; only 4–5 are deep sleep, cycled through onset, light, deep, and REM (dreaming, twitching). Positions signal mood: loaf = alert-relaxed, curl = cozy/secure, side = deep relax/dreaming, belly-up = total trust.

1 Cat Sleep Basics

Cats appear to sleep 16–20 hours a day, but ~3/4 is light dozing; actual deep sleep is only 4–5 hours.

Sleep moves through four stages—onset, light, deep, and dream (REM)—in cycles. In deep sleep, growth hormone repairs bones, muscle, and immunity; in REM the cat dreams and may twitch.

2 What the Positions Mean

Loaf poses: paws tucked or forelimbs curled mean relaxed but still a bit alert; in unsafe spots the cat stays ready to spring up.

Curl: body fully curled with tail to nose in a snug spot—very comfortable and secure, a favorite pose.

Side-sleep: tail relaxed (not to nose); the ‘paddling’ side pose and belly-bared side pose mean deep relaxation and likely dreaming (leg kicks, whisker twitches).

Belly-up: paws overhead (often a staged ‘surrender’ pose by the owner) or fully relaxed underside with limbs splayed—only in a place the cat trusts completely. Touching a belly-up cat meets no defense; it feels truly safe.
