How to Care for a Newly Adopted Golden Retriever Puppy

Brought home a 50-day Golden; free roam, accidents everywhere... A senior said feed-water-wake then carry to toilet and wait, but it didn't go in toilet, only after release. So caged it. Is that ok, any growth effect, what to do?
