Are merle and standard Border Collies very different?

The main difference is coat color. Standard Border Collies are black-white, brown or yellow with solid patches; merles are grey, mottled, gradient-like (some reddish-brown). Merle is rarer and pricier, but that's not a quality measure — temperament matters more than looks.
