Canine parvovirus is a common, highly contagious dog disease that affects canids such as dogs, foxes, and wolves, but it does not infect people directly. Humans can still carry the virus on hands and clothing after touching an infected dog or its waste, spreading it to other dogs, so thorough disinfection matters. How Accurate Are Dog Parvo Test Kits?
Canine parvovirus test kits are generally 80-90% accurate, but results depend on timing of infection, viral load, brand, and technique. In early infection or with low viral load they can show false negatives, and poor storage or handling causes errors, so clinics use them only for initial screening. To confirm parvo, veterinarians combine the kit with PCR, serology, pathology, and clinical signs such as vomiting, diarrhea with blood, fever, and lethargy. Proper use involves collecting a swab sample, applying it to the strip, waiting a few minutes, and reading the result against the instructions.
Does Abdominal Fluid in Cats Always Mean FIP?
Fluid in a cat's abdomen, or ascites, is a sign—not a diagnosis. It can stem from liver or heart disease, kidney failure, malnutrition, or peritonitis caused by infection, viruses, or injury, and only one of those causes is feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). Because the symptom alone cannot confirm FIP, diagnosis needs bloodwork, imaging such as X-ray or ultrasound, and viral testing.
