Can keeping a hamster give you the plague?

Pet hamsters bought from reputable sources are generally not at risk of plague, since they are quarantined before sale and stay caged with no contact with other animals. Still, they carry some bacteria, so wash any bite or scratch with soap and water and disinfect it, and keep the cage and hamster clean.
