Symptoms and Differences of Common Hamster Illnesses
📝 Summary
Hamster colds, respiratory infections, and allergies look alike. Colds bring sneezing, red nose, lethargy; respiratory infection adds audible breathing but may not sap energy; allergies follow new bedding or scented products with sudden sneezing and skin rash. Keep the cage clean and see a vet if dull.
1 Common Hamster Illnesses Compared
I. Hamster Cold
1. After a cold, intermittent sneezing, runny nose, slightly red nose, and poor spirits.
2. Colds vary (wind-cold, wind-heat); do not give banlangen at the first sneeze—find the cause. Clean the cage and change bedding during treatment.
II. Respiratory Infection
1. Bacterial infection causes occasional or repeated sneezing, even in sleep, with audible breathing like hiccups; runny nose shows most in bears.
2. Energy may stay normal—eating, drinking, sleeping; if mild, skip drugs and just keep the cage clean and dust low. If dull, see a vet at once.
III. Allergy
1. Allergies follow new bedding/items—sudden sneezing and frequent nose-rubbing.
2. They react to dust or lint in new bedding; if sneezing stops after changing it, bedding is the cause. Scented human products (lotion, perfume, mosquito coil) also trigger allergies—keep them away.
Skin allergy can show red paws, swelling, hair loss; severe cases need desensitization at a vet, or it can be life-threatening.
