Skin Types in Golden Retrievers Most Prone to Skin Disease
π Summary
Spring-summer is peak skin disease; damp, hot, dogs lie in water, step in puddles, even roll. Then ear mites come; drugs only treat symptoms, recur. A vet shares why Goldens get eczema and allergic eczema.
1 Overview
Under-nourished skin
Usually dry dull coat, even prickly. This skin allergizes easily, itchy; slight neglect – eczema or pyoderma. Drugs temporarily help but recur. Usually from poor nutrition – growing puppies and adults on long low-protein low-fat food. Need high-protein high-fat food, fish oil, vitamins; symptoms fade.
Metabolic skin
Another: the dog eats well, expensive food, best drugs, but recurs each spring-summer. Home disinfected daily. Yet skin disease. But the tongue coating is slightly yellow – unseen unless noticed; not the bright red of healthy dogs. These dogs are fat, low exercise, slow metabolism – adults. Persistent daily intense exercise to boost metabolism heals.
Post-surgery or serious-illness skin
Another: after surgery or serious illness, much energy lost, low resistance causes skin issues. Light scratch – red; easily allergic. Usually blood-deficiency allergic skin; tongue pale. Like humans, live by blood; boost blood, nutrition, vitamins; symptoms fade.
80% of dog skin disease is from diet, 20% outside. For skin disease, use duck-and-pear or pea kibble – good for recovery, no irritation. Avoid beef and lamb during illness! The editor made a table for common skin diseases; message for guidance. Consult a vet’s free online doctor for tough cases.
