Hypoglossal nerve paralysis causes the tongue to protrude from the mouth and makes eating, chewing, and swallowing difficult. It usually follows submandibular trauma, a hematoma, or a tumor pressing on the nerve, and chronic cases can lead to tongue atrophy.
