How to Train an American Shorthair Cat?

Cats are harder to train than dogs due to lower obedience. Build a bond through play, use treats to teach 'sit', 'stay' and 'come', keep commands consistent and brief, and be patient without punishment.

My dog fell from a height; the right hind leg won’t touch the ground, it keeps lying down, eats and drinks, breathes a bit fast, no stool or urine. Bone fractures are ruled out; the right hind leg root/butt area hurts when pressed firmly but not lightly, and lifting the leg hurts, like pain in the leg pit. What is it, is it serious?

A fall can injure the pelvis and hip (sciatic, pubic, iliac bones) or nerves, affecting defecation and possibly causing hind-limb paralysis. A firm pelvic press causing pain fits this. Get a DR X-ray; fix if fractured, or use anti-inflammatory and NSAID painkillers conservatively.

My 45kg Alaskan Malamute, almost 3, recently in heat and got demodicosis; ears are dirty and itchy after cleaning. A chewable worked then relapsed and worsened; eyes/mouth/feet have purulent crusts. Heard doramectin helps but unsure if safe for long-haired dogs and timing with the chewable.

Confirmed demodicosis is treated orally, by injection, or medicated baths. After relapse, a second deworming plus ivermectin injection is an option; dose by vet to avoid toxicity. Alaskans are NOT collie-type, so ivermectin is safe. Medicated baths and vitamins help; clean the environment.

Redness, swelling, and pus bumps suggest interdigital dermatitis or pyoderma; one wound even has maggots, meaning deep infection. See a vet; possible bone injury from trauma. Use an Elizabethan collar, clean, disinfect, drain pus, and keep dry; supplements help recovery.

I’m in college but go home during holidays. I use minoxidil for alopecia; first semester at school my hair recovered a lot… (long context about cat safety). Should I avoid minoxidil entirely around my cat, or just keep it away from the drug and my hair/pillow?

Having a cat does not forbid minoxidil, but it is highly toxic to cats and dogs, which lack the enzyme to metabolize it. If you must use it, cage the cat, keep it away from treated areas and your pillow, wash pillowcases, and wash hands; always apply away from pets.
