1. Trust and affection. If a hamster willingly eats in your hand, it likes and trusts you. Hamsters that know you may run onto your hand or body — they recognize your scent and want closeness. Some, sensing you nearby, chew the cage not to wear teeth but to get attention, beg for food, or ask to play.
2. Anger. A squeaking ‘eek’ warns you to stop bothering it or it may bite. Standing on hind legs pawing at things is a fight-ready pose — do not tease. Rolling onto its back, legs up, kicking, is also a combat posture meaning it is truly angry.
3. Relaxation. Grooming, or ears dropped and lying down, means the hamster is relaxed — a good time to interact.
4. Stress. Pacing a fixed route shows high stress; so does frantic wheel-running to vent. When stressed, give it space and leave it alone.
5. Discomfort. A hamster that feels unwell may chew the cage wildly or gnaw its mineral stone; skin disease brings frequent grooming; staying asleep instead of waking at night can mean illness; and sneaky, off behavior can signal somewhere it hurts.
