I. Causes of Rabbit Eye Congestion

To find the cause of red, swollen eyes, inspect carefully: is there hair loss around the eye? Are there tiny crusts or dandruff in the socket? If so, the rabbit likely has conjunctivitis or mite infection.

Mite infection treatment:

1. Clean the eyes. Wash the sick rabbit’s eyes daily with saline: lift the upper eyelid, use a needleless 5 ml syringe filled with diluted saline to flush the eye, then release the lid and let it rest.

2. Apply medication. Five minutes after flushing, lift the lid again and put 2 drops of tobramycin eye drops on the upper lid, then lift the lower lid and put 2 drops in the gap between the front corner and the eyeball. Gently cover the eye with your hand for 1 minute to spread the drops, then release.

II. Other Causes:

1. Foreign-body irritation

If the rabbit’s environment is dirty with dust, particles can blow into the eyes and irritate them. Long hair also easily irritates the eyes. After clearing discharge, apply 2 drops of rabbit eye drops, then wipe around the eye with a damp towel.

2. Eye inflammation

Some eye discharge is normal but usually minimal and needs clearing. If neither the rabbit nor owner cleans it, discharge builds up and breeds bacteria, causing inflammation. Wipe it away with a damp towel, then apply 1–2 drops of rabbit eye drops daily until recovery.

3. Poor diet

Rabbits do best on hay or specialized pellets, but if fed only soft or liquid food their teeth aren’t worn properly; overlong tooth roots press on the nasolacrimal duct and affect the eyes. Build good eating habits; if tooth wear is severe, see a vet.
