My Red-eared slider has a swollen foot–how should I handle it?
Expert Answer
Hello, a swollen turtle foot requires identifying the cause. Check whether the swollen foot has small broken wounds; unnoticed wounds easily cause bacterial infection, in which case dry-docking is recommended–soak the affected area in potassium permanganate solution for 15 minutes, then clean with iodine or 1% to 2% hydrogen peroxide and apply erythromycin or chlortetracycline ointment twice daily for two weeks.
During this period, massage the affected limb to reduce swelling and promote absorption, and feed more meat protein to recover strength and immunity. If from impact or falling, fracture is possible and needs an X-ray and fixation at the vet. Some internal organ failure can also cause swelling and necrosis with a poor prognosis; watch the turtle’s spirit and appetite and take it to the vet if abnormal.
