My Pomeranian Was Dropped and Can’t Stand – What Injury Is This, and Can It Heal at Home?
Expert Answer
After a fall, trouble walking and rear-leg paralysis can come from several causes. First, trauma can fracture the front or hind legs, shown by refusal to bear weight, deformity and bone crepitus.
Second, a fall often causes joint dislocation from damaged ligaments and joint capsule, also preventing normal walking.
Third, the most serious is spinal injury from trauma or disc herniation, causing inability to walk or paralysis of the hind legs.
Fourth, mild soft-tissue swelling and muscle strain usually recovers with over a week of rest. The first three cannot heal at home and need prompt X-ray or CT and surgery.
