My cat lost a patch of fur on its chin—what is wrong?

When you notice a bald patch on your cat’s chin, first recall whether it bumped or scraped itself; injury to the chin skin can cause hair loss, and in that case just dab the spot with iodine to disinfect.

Also check whether the bald area is red, swollen, inflamed, or itchy. A red swollen lump could be an eosinophilic granuloma, usually an allergic reaction, which needs prompt veterinary diagnosis; once confirmed, an oral antibacterial spray and oral anti-inflammatory or immune-modulating medication can be used. A clinic scraping can also rule out other skin diseases so treatment matches the cause.
