This is a scaly face mite infection, a lesion caused by an external parasite that usually lives on the beak, cere, eyelids, and feet of parrots. Severe cases can deform the beak and even suffocate the bird if the nostrils are blocked, and the mites are contagious, contaminating cages and requiring isolation and disinfection.
Treatment uses non-toxic medical white petroleum jelly applied to the affected area twice daily to soften the crusts and expose healthy skin until improvement. However, the infection may not be fully eradicated and budgerigars tend to relapse, so maintain immunity and environmental hygiene afterward.
