πŸ“ Summary

Rumor says dogs can't eat pork. Let's look at whether pork is actually safe for dogs.

1 Overview

Raw Pork

Raw pork carries Trichinella, causing bad reactions; the folk ‘pork makes dogs’ guts slip’ comes from this worm plus pork’s unique fat – the real culprits behind indigestion and gut inflammation.

Larvae travel via blood to tissues, feeding in muscle; adults form in just 16 days, then lodge in the small intestine. From day one your dog shows:

Vomiting

Diarrhea

Restlessness

Fever

Lethargy

Inflammation

Stiff movement

Body-wide pain, and more

Note: not every infected dog shows all signs; weaker immune systems mean worse symptoms.

Pig Bones

Pig bones aren’t great to chew – they splinter more easily than other bones, with more hazards.

Pork Products

In 2015 the WHO found processed meats like bacon and sausage are a major cancer cause.

Bacon: exploding fat and salt – very hard to digest; overdo it and pancreatitis comes calling.

Ham: also salt-heavy; too much salt dehydrates and thirsts the dog, and gulping water after strains every organ. It’s death by a thousand cuts.

Pig Skin

Some think pig skin is low-fat and fine for dogs.

Wrong! Data shows pig skin is 44.6% fat – less than pure fat but more than streaky pork. Don’t dismiss its fat.

It’s also only 11.8% protein – far less than pork – with few vitamins and little but iron.

Pig skin isn’t nutritious; using it as a chew toy is a joke – cheap and tough, nothing else.

My dog eats pork and never gets diarrhea

True, some dogs tolerate pork fine – but that doesn’t mean they should eat it forever.

Pork’s high fat helps no dog.
