I forced open my 15-day-old puppy’s eyes; what should I do and how can I avoid blindness?

Newborn puppies usually open their eyes around 9 to 13 days after birth. If they have not opened by then, the owner must never forcibly open them by hand. Even if the eyes are half-open, observe and supplement nutrition, as some open on their own after about a week. If forced-open eyes produce discharge, clean gently with saline on a cotton swab to prevent infection.

When infection occurs you can use neomycin sulfate eye drops, 1 to 2 drops, 5 to 8 times a day. Also, if you notice redness, damage or persistent discharge after forcing the eyes open, take the puppy to a pet hospital promptly for examination and medication to avoid affecting its vision.
