1 Why Rabbits Get White Eye Discharge and How to Treat It

Causes of white discharge in a rabbit’s eyes:

1. Diet-related ‘heat’: Feeding only dry pellets or human food, plus little water, makes the rabbit ‘heat up’ and produce discharge or tearing.

2. Irritating fur: Fur around the eyes that is too long brushes the eye, prompting protective white secretion; poor hygiene and dust worsen it.

3. Eye inflammation: Conjunctivitis or third-eyelid issues increase white discharge and crust.

What to do about white discharge:

For diet causes, switch from dry pellets and human food to hays like alfalfa or ryegrass plus fresh vegetables, and offer plenty of clean lukewarm water; the heating signs fade and disappear.

For fur or debris, trim the fur around the eyes short, and keep the enclosure clean to avoid health impact from a dirty environment.

For conjunctivitis or third-eyelid problems, clean the eye and apply rabbit-specific anti-inflammatory eye drops 1–2 times daily, 1–2 drops each time, and fit an Elizabethan collar after dosing; the rabbit recovers soon.
