How to Treat Stubborn Frequent Urination in Cats

1 Overview

Stubborn frequent urination has multiple causes

1. Crystal irritation, foreign objects often irritate the urethra.

2. Bacterial infection.

3. Catheter damage to the urethra causing hyperplasia and spasm. Many urinate at night, sleep by day.

4. A cat that squats whenever it sees you may be stressed from constant meds/shots/watering; try a sedative.

Multi-cause urination basically cannot be cured in days

If your cat has stubborn frequent urination and you want quick recovery, do these:

1. Supplement over 200 ml water daily. More water – when coaxing and force-watering fail, subcutaneous fluids are best, a very important step. But few owners comply; most think they can force-water, yet 200-300 ml a day – in my experience few cats cooperate; with that triangular mouth, if it does not want water, it leaks out the other side.

2. Strong anti-inflammation. Whenever I meet a frequent-urination client, I suggest the cystitis treatment package – a few days of anti-inflammatory shots. But most say they have their own meds to argue with me. Few comply. Having treated over ten thousand urethritis cats, the antibiotics I suggest – cefixime and ciprofloxacin – are already high-tier, yet only milder cases respond well. For thorough bacteria kill, shots work far better (ceftiofur and enrofloxacin, with proper dose/frequency and along with fluids for best results).

But if you say you have antibiotics, they are likely low-tier like what the vet prescribed – only treat mild infection and easily cause resistance. Antibiotic bacteria-killing is not bad drug some effect, good drug good effect – insufficient potency means no effect and resistance.

3. Antispasmodics – flavoxate – and bladder-regulating Chinese medicine – urolithin. Many success cases took about a month of urolithin and flavoxate to recover, after first ruling out bacterial infection with shots.

4. Diet regulation – cat meals and prescription food are also key to curing cystitis.

Though it looks severe, treatment is faster; the longer it lasts, the harder, needing your cooperation. Many think my cat is not that bad, let me try urolithin first; I suggest water, they ignore it; I suggest prescription food, they say no condition; I suggest shots, they say they have meds. Finally after urolithin a while still frequent, they say urolithin is useless.

Shots for inflammation, but still frequent; then a month of flavoxate and urolithin to normalize. It later relapsed; treated last April, this February a small relapse, but overall stable.
