I. Treatment of Rabbit Red-Eye Disease

1. Red-eye is conjunctivitis. Because it’s highly contagious to other animals and people, isolate the sick rabbit at once in a separate place, keep healthy animals away, and prevent it from roaming and spreading infection.

2. After isolating, thoroughly clean and disinfect the area and all items the rabbit used; wash, disinfect, and dry its supplies, carefully covering every corner, especially hard-to-reach spots.

3. Eye discharge increases, so wipe around the eye gently with a warm, damp clean towel to clear discharge and dirt, then put 2–3 drops of rabbit eye drops deep into the eye. The towel must be strictly cleaned, disinfected, and dried for reuse. Wear gloves and a mask throughout, don’t rub hard, and stop the rabbit from rubbing its eye; after medication fit a small Elizabethan collar.

4. Red-eye isn’t cured quickly, so care well for a while: keep the area clean, and supplement nutrition with hay and drained greens so balanced nutrition raises resistance against the bacteria. After recovery, keep the rabbit from dirty places to avoid relapse.

The main trigger is certain bacteria multiplying, and a dirty living place is a leading cause. Keep the environment clean to avoid red-eye. Recovery takes a bit over a week of careful care—it will take effort, but it’s worth it.
