1 Puppy Hypoglycemia: Causes, Signs, and Care

1. Why puppies are prone

A growing puppy burns a lot of energy, but its small stomach holds little per meal, so feed it small and often. A missed meal can leave it overly hungry and cause hypoglycemia — in a small breed like a Chihuahua, even one skipped meal can do it. Lively, playful pups can also burn excess calories through exercise even after eating, so watch them too.

2. Signs you can spot

Hypoglycemia means blood sugar below normal — simply, too little energy. Puppies need lots of energy daily, so pay close attention to poor eaters or those off their food. Typical signs are weakness, a wobbly walk, collapsing limbs, trembling, and in severe cases loss of consciousness. How to tell coma apart: a normal dog wakes when called or shaken; a comatose one does not respond at all — get it to the vet at once.

3. Treatment

At home the emergency step is sugar water at 5%, fed by spoon since the weak puppy will not take it voluntarily. Do not use honey water — a puppy’s gut is not mature and honey risks botulism.

4. Prevention

1) Pick the right kibble: the bag states the age and weight portion, and choose a quality, easy-to-digest, high-protein, high-carbohydrate food. If you make food at home, keep it balanced — a bit of extra effort, but worth knowing.

2) At weaning the mother usually brings up chewed food for the pup to take in and digest easily. After weaning, soak the kibble in warm water before feeding to aid digestion.

A puppy is like a little baby and needs extra patience and care. Keep that patience and it will grow into another protector of the home.
