Many owners find the dog knows a command, but when showing off it suddenly forgets everything, embarrassing the owner.

1 Overview

This is not that the dog really forgot, but it may be distracted by other things and ignore the command. Though linked to obedience, it is more often about focus. Today we teach how to build the dog’s attention.

1. The Role of Attention

Building attention is vital in training; if the dog’s attention is on the owner, it learns anything fast, but if always scattered, training is impossible.

So start training with attention, keeping the dog focused on you; this also helps future heel work. Only with focus can the dog follow commands outdoors without distraction.

2. How to Build Attention

You need some tools; training morning, noon and night daily, the dog learns soon. Tools: a few treats, a clicker (cheap online; optional but advised).

First train indoors: take the dog to a quiet spot, sit it, put the treat at your chin, call its name to get attention. When it sees the treat, wait a few seconds; as long as its gaze stays, click to mark the correct behavior, then reward.

The dog learns this is beneficial. Keep it up and attention improves fast!

3. Notes

Increase the time bit by bit; even a few seconds at first earns reward. But if the gaze leaves, do NOT reward, to avoid wrong association. Even when attention is well built:

Outdoors there are many interesting things, so it is understandable if the dog loses focus; relax it a bit. Only demand attention when performing or filming!
