How to train a dog to heel (walk alongside)?

Choose a flat, clean, quiet place for heeling training. Put on the leash, let the dog wander briefly, then tug the leash and call its name to get attention. When it pauses, shorten the leash and give the ‘heel’ command while walking briskly so it stays at your side.

If the dog gets too excited – barking, jumping, or refusing to move – stop and let it calm down before continuing.
