After preparing litter and a box, put some of the cat’s urine or feces in it, then place the cat inside to familiarize it with the box and scent. About half an hour after meals the cat may want to go; it circles and sniffs first.

Take it to the box then, and if it eliminates there, reward a snack. With repetition it learns to use the box on its own.
