How to Reduce a Dog’s Strong Body Odor

1 Overview
Bathing too often destroys the oil, strips the skin’s protection and makes the coat dry, dull and brittle. When the environment or weather makes the dog dirty or smelly, try these instead of frequent baths:
1. After each walk, wash the paws and face.
2. Eyes and ears easily catch bacteria; use disinfecting wipes to clean them often.
3. When odor is strong, find the cause – maybe uncleaned poop, or disease like oral disease, ear mites, digestive or skin problems. If locally soiled by poop, clean at home; for bad breath use a dog-specific breath product.
4. After walks, comb the coat; it massages and removes loose hair and weeds/dirt, keeping the dog clean. A good-quality pet comb (such as a de-shedding comb) is recommended.
5. Odor also ties to diet, so feed kibble with balanced protein and avoid frequent meat that burdens digestion and worsens odor. Good kibble not only tastes good but also keeps the dog’s body and stool odor lighter.
