How to Help Your Cat Learn to Tolerate Baths

1 Why Cats Dislike Water

Cats fear water largely because of a water-aversion trait. Certified cat-behavior consultant Ingrid Johnson notes that cats most likely self-evolved to suit their environment about 9,500 years ago, in dry habitats with no chance to swim. Johnson says a few individual cats may be curious about water, but historically they evolved in arid conditions; in 19 years of working with cats she has never seen one swim voluntarily.

2 Are There Water-Loving Cats?

Behavior consultant and author Marilyn Krieger points out that, compared with most cats, some breeds—such as the Maine Coon, Turkish Van, and Turkish Angora—may actually enjoy playing in water. The Turkish Van is unafraid of water because it grew up near water; it lives by a lake where a local fish it loves to eat thrives, and its semi-long coat dries quickly, so it doesn’t end up soaked and miserable.

3 How to Bathe a Cat

Cats can adapt to water, but introduce it from kittenhood. Go slowly and consistently so the kitten feels no stress. Play with the cat first to help it relax. Bathe in a container if possible; if using a showerhead, set the flow to the minimum, since most cats fear the spray noise. Let the paws touch water first; when washing the head, keep water out of the ears and eyes and place cotton balls at the ear openings beforehand.

Protecting the ears prevents water entering the head and causing other problems, and also blocks the noise so the cat feels safe. If you fear being scratched, use a cat-washing aid such as a laundry bag. After the bath, quickly blot the cat dry with an absorbent towel, then move to a low fan setting and gradually increase it. Never use your hands as toys during the process.
