How to Fatten Up a Thin Hamster
📝 Summary
Many pick hamsters for their round, chubby look, but their own stays thin and they wonder how to fatten it. Here is how.
1 Overview
1. Do not fatten blindly – weigh it first against the standard for its age. If truly underweight, adjust the diet: feed mealworms, pine nuts, peanuts, sunflower seeds, nuts, apple, and feed more often. These are rich and meet needs, and hamsters like them.
2. Some thin hamsters eat little; some just cannot gain from poor nutrition. Two causes: one, the diet lacks what it needs, so even much food fails to fatten – common with single diets, so balance the nutrition; two, the body cannot absorb nutrients, so food is wasted – usually a weak or long-ill gut with low absorption. Fixing the gut matters more than more food.
3. A hamster’s home is stable (a cage), so internal parasites are unlikely, but poor hygiene or other pets (cats, dogs) can infect it, causing thinness. Confirm parasites first; if present, use small-pet dewormer. Once cleared, the body recovers.
In short, do not fatten blindly – find the cause, then treat and fatten. To judge a hamster’s health, read ‘What Shows a Hamster Is Healthy?’.
